(One of mine actually synchronizes a folder on another client that was already mapped to my main PC so I opted for convenience. A bit less network traffic if it is on either the source or the target a litttle easier to maintain if all controlled from one place. If you run it from the MSS though, you meĮed to be sure the MSS has access to the client disks/folders. I run it from the client as I am synchronizing from mostly a single client.
(Mine runs daily at 11:30 PM 11 of my 12 defined folder pairs are set to be active for "Run All".) You set up the various folder pairs and then schedule SyncToy to run on the schedule you desire. (SyncToy will run multiple defined and selected folder pairs when "run all" is used, so all these can be done at once.) You would set up a separate "folder pair" for each pair of folders (including, optionally, sub-folders) that you want to have synchronized. SyncToy (and RoboCopy) will copy files to any specified target. (FYI, I have also recently used RoboCopy and that seems OK too.) I have also seen that it might be better to use v1.4 rather than 2.0? Is this still the case? I would still be interested in hearing from those of you who use this on your MSS though. If it can be installed & used from a client does it have to be the client on which the files reside or can it bne on another one?Īfter a little Googling I found the following resource which seems to answer some of my questions Would SyncToy have to be installed on the MSS or could it be on a client? How would SyncToy be scheduled to run at a specific time every day? I could write a script/batch file that could be run every day but that seems 'messy' compared to using a program designed to do this from the outset. Will SyncToy (or any other program I may not have heard of yet) be able to organize files in a similar order as this? Shared Folders/Software/Databases/DB4/DB2.mdb Shared Folders/Software/Databases/DB3/DB1.mdb Shared Folders/Software/Databases/DB2/DB1.mdb Shared Folders/Software/Databases/DB1/DB1.mdb I would also like to keep some sort of order in these databases and as some of them have the same name I plan to create subfolders in backup directory that would look something like this
I am hoping I can use SyncToy to copy these files from the client where they reside to a folder on the MSS - probably in a directory I will create in Shared Folders. If I delete a file in my test directory and run Restore I see the missing file and I can recover it quickly & easily.īut the files I want to backup off site do not reside on the MSS but in various different folders on a client. I am using Jungle Disc/Amazon S3 to back up some important files off-site - only a single test directory off the root of Shared Folders at the moment with 12MB worth of files so I can see it working and have peace of mind with it. If I tell you what I am trying to achieve maybe some kind soul could help me out here please?
I have also seen that it might be better to use v1.4 rather than 2.0? Both applications can use a database to detect deleted files so they’re deleted in both folders and not automatically recreated.Searching through here I see more that more than one of you appear to use, or have used SyncToy? You can configure either application to sync changes in both directions or in only one direction. Specify a pair of folders, usually on different storage devices, and the application will synchronize files between them. Resilio Connect, an enterprise-grade version of Sync Business, offers WAN Optimization as well as advanced management capabilities.

FreeFileSync, a free and open-source sync program, isn't as well-known, but it has SyncToy beat. As a longtime SyncToy user, I was impressed by FreeFileSync's performance, support for locked files, features and portability.įreeFileSync and SyncToy both perform the same functions.

We have SyncToy listed on our Best Windows Software page - it's popular and it works. Microsoft SyncToy is one of the most popular, but FreeFileSync gives it a run for its money. Dropbox and other cloud storage systems are great, but they aren't as fast as a USB flash drive or removable hard drive to back up a large amount of files. Sync programs make local backups a snap by copying only changed files.
